Matt Kenseth's #20 Dollar General Camry was the fastest Toyota qualifier. |
MATT KENSETH, No. 20 Dollar General Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Starting Position: 3rd
Is your performance in qualifying at Martinsville continuing to improve?
"I think in another 10 or 15 years I'll have it. It was a good lap for us, especially that first session. It surprised me with our speed there and thought we were going to have a shot at the pole and I didn't quite have the same feel I wanted there last lap. Overall, that's great — you can't complain about starting third, especially here. There have been a lot of times I've been 33rd. It was a good day for us."
Matt Kenseth has never won at Martinsville. |
Did you have a shot at the pole for Sunday's race?
"Well, you never know with me and Martinsville. You used to ask me and I had shot at last or I didn't know what it used to be. I had a spectacular lap that first run, I couldn't believe how fast it was being our first speed run then on the second run I got up there on our second lap and didn't quite have it. I probably could have done a better job there. Overall it was a good day for us. I really wanted to be on the pole after that first run, but this gives our Dollar General Toyota team a good spot to start on Sunday.
DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Freight Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Starting Position: 5th
How was the qualifying round?
Denny Hamlin has won at each of the four remaining tracks in The Chase. |
"Overall happy with it. Just made a big mistake going out there early in the first session. The car wasn't quite right, but we adjusted on it and got it better. Earned P5 with as many laps as we had on our tires — pretty happy with that."
What do you plan to work on in tomorrow's practice session?
"We'll mess around with some different packages. We've been really working on some different packages for this race and we haven't quite honed in on what's best so we'll work on those tomorrow."
Would you have changed your qualifying strategy now that you know how things played out?
"We missed it a little bit on that first run and we had so many laps and cycles on our tires. I'm actually pretty happy to come back to fifth there. Proud of our FedEx Freight Toyota team — solid qualifying effort and we'll get a good pit stall from that. After my first run and we were in the 20s, I wasn't too encouraged to where we were going to be but we rebounded nicely in qualifying."
Clint Bowyer says the #15 AAA Insurance Camry was loose in qualifying. |

How was the qualifying round?
"Well darn it. We were good and made it into the final round but just got a little loose. We can see the front where we are starting and that's always a good thing at Martinsville."
