After the Beetle its debut in Red Bull Global Rallycross Los Angeles with Tanner Foust, Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross will field a second Beetle at this week’s Red Bull Global Rallycross Las Vegas at The LINQ for driver Scott Speed. Speed, who is one of four remaining drivers eligible for the series’ Supercar championship, will trade in his Polo, which took victories in Barbados, Austin, and Los Angeles I this season.
“We’ve driven it enough to feel more confident with this," Speed said. “Obviously we’d like to have had more testing with it before we bring it out in race circumstances, but we feel like our odds are better with this than with the Polo. I think everyone here is just happy to get working on what our future is, and that’s this car, which hopefully gets off to a good start."
After an intensive development process spearheaded by the World Rally Championship-winning Volkswagen Motorsport organization, the Beetle debuted with a heat victory in Foust’s very first heat race with it. The two-time series champion added two last chance qualifier victories with the car and spent most of Los Angeles I challenging for a podium position.
Speed, meanwhile, has his sights set on a record-setting sixth career Supercar race victory (and fourth of the season) in Wednesday’s final, as he looks to remain a title contender next season.
“No one’s focused on the championship here," he admitted. “At the end of the day, we’re going to go out and hopefully win another race, call it four races won, and whoever wins the championship—well, we’ve done our job as a team. We can’t help the unfortunate things that have happened this year.
“We’re going to do our job this weekend, hopefully come across with another race win, and move on."
