GP2 veteran Coletti to test IndyCar

Stefano Coletti

Add Italian Stefano Coletti to the list of potential Verizon IndyCar Series hopefuls, as he'll test for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports at Sebring next week.

Coletti, the GP2 Series veteran who lives in Monaco to avoid taxes, will join fellow GP2 ace Davide Valsecchi – a past series champion – at next week's test. He revealed the news on Twitter late Tuesday evening.

The opportunity for Coletti exists to showcase his skill set to the team as it seeks a replacement, almost certainly, for Russian Mikhail Aleshin.

Funding issues appear to be the roadblock for the popular driver, who was on the rebound and recovery from injuries sustained in the season finale at Auto Club Speedway.

Coletti joins a seemingly overflowing list of drivers who have or will test for SPM this offseason. Along with Valsecchi, Gabby Chaves, Rocky Moran Jr. and Rodolfo Gonzalez have also had time in an SPM IndyCar this offseason. NBC Sports
