Barcelona Day 1: Maldonado fastest for Lotus at end

Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari would have been fastest on the first day of F1 testing in Barcelona had it not been for the fact he did not run on the soft Pirelli tires.

Pastor Maldonado used soft tires to go fastest for Lotus-Mercedes on a Barcelona Formula 1 to pip the Ferrari by 0.156s.

Raikkonen had put Ferrari on top, initially on Pirelli's 'winter hard' and then using mediums to do a 1m25.167s, this despite a flurry of soft-tire runs in mid-afternoon, during which both Maldonado and Red Bull-Renault's Daniel Ricciardo went on the faster rubber but could not beat Raikkonen's time.

Felipe Nasr's Williams and Suzie Wolff's Sauber came together early in the afternoon session, when Wolff was on an out-lap and morning pacesetter Nasr was at full speed.

Contact between the Williams's left front and Sauber's right-rear sent Nasr into the Turn 5 barriers, with Wolff also coming to rest in the gravel.
