DeltaWing Set for Street Racing Debut
While it may be the current race car 's first trip to Long Beach, the DeltaWing heritage has roots in the area, as the initial DeltaWing was built by Dan Gurney 's Santa Ana-based All American Racers. Given the car culture that still defines the Southland and its spirit of entrepreneurism, the team looks forward to introducing So Cal sports car racing fans to the innovative and eye-catching DeltaWing.
Drivers Katherine Legge and Memo Rojas both have earned a number of "firsts" at Long Beach.
Legge left England to make her mark in the U.S. in 2005 and promptly won her first Formula Atlantic event in Long Beach, thus becoming the first woman to win a major North American open-wheel race.
"Long Beach is very close to my heart, as it was the scene of my first win in America; it really catapulted my career," Legge said. "It’s a fantastic circuit in a gorgeous location and it’s such a storied track. Every time you race there is special, but this time will be even more so, since it’s the first time the DeltaWing will race there. I think the car will run well, with the long straights and tight corners."
Rojas won the first TUDOR Championship event there last year with Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, also in his first trip to the famed street course.
"Long Beach has so much history with so many drivers and so many classes, from Formula One and IndyCar to sports cars," Rojas said. "Growing up, it’s one of the tracks you want to race at and win at – and I 've been lucky enough to do both. This is the first street race for the DeltaWing, but I think the acceleration and the tight corners will suit the car just fine."
The DWC13 ran in six TUDOR Championship races in 2014, with its best finish fourth at Petit Le Mans. The team is coming off a 12th-place finish in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida.
