Zach Veach set to make sports car debut in Monterey

One of open-wheel's rising stars – Zach Veach – will make a slight detour into sports cars this weekend.

The 20-year-old American, who has been a mainstay in the Mazda Road to Indy for the last five years in all of Indy Lights, Pro Mazda and USF2000, will share the No. 85 JDC-Miller Motorsports Oreca FLM09 with Mikhail Goikhberg at this weekend’s TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Veach has track experience from his open-wheel starts there.

Veach finished third in last year’s Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires championship, behind Gabby Chaves and Jack Harvey, with three wins.

While he worked diligently throughout the offseason to gather a budget to make it into the Verizon IndyCar Series, Veach is yet to make his series debut.

He has remained active as one of a handful of drivers of two-seater IndyCars at the opening races of the season.

The Stockdale, Ohio native should be one to watch, in what will be his sports car debut, at the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix Powered by Mazda. NBC Sports
