Negri Paces Opening Practice at Monterey

Ozz Negri led Friday’s opening TUDOR United SportsCar Championship practice at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Negri led the Prototype (P) competitors with a lap of 1:20.077 (100.613 mph) in the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing with Curb/Agajanian Ligier JS P2/Honda co-driven by John Pew.

Unlike last year – which featured a pair of two-hour races with split classes – Sunday’s Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix powered by Mazda includes all four TUDOR Championship classes. The two-hour, 40-minute race begins at 1:05 p.m. PT on Sunday (live, FOX Sports 1, 4 p.m. ET).

“We were a little frustrated at Long Beach, so I’m glad to lead opening practice," Negri said. “We were very anxious to come here. We knew the track would suit us, so we did our homework and unloaded pretty good. We know the track will change, so we want to stay on top of it."

Richard Westbrook was second in the No. 90 VisitFlorida.com Corvette DP co-driven by Michael Valiante, running 1:20.267 (100.375 mph). Long Beach winner Jordan Taylor, who co-drives with his brother Ricky, was third with a lap of 1:20.470 (100.122 mph) in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP.

Bruno Junqueira led the Prototype Challenge (PC) competitors, running 1:21.727 (98.582 mph) in the No. 11 RSR Racing AutoMax USA ORECA FLM09.

Long Beach winner Dirk Werner led GT Le Mans (GTLM), running 1:23.862 (96.072 mph) in the No. 25 BMW Team IHG Rewards Club BMW Z4 GTLM co-driven by Bill Auberlen. Fastest in GT Daytona (GTD) was Andy Lally with a lap of 1:27.738 (91.828 mph) in the No. 44 Magnus Racing FlexBox Porsche 911 GT America co-driven by John Potter.

TUDOR Championship competitors will get a second hour of practice on Friday afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m. PT. Saturday’s schedule includes final practice at 10:50 a.m., with qualifying at 4:15 p.m.
