This may be the best – and most expensive – Halloween costume you ever buy.

Racing legend Mario Andretti won a lot of races during his career. He won them in IndyCars, Formula One cars, even stock cars. He's won both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500. And now, maybe the biggest piece of memorabilia from his lone Indy 500 win that's not sitting in a museum is up for auction.

You can own Mario Andretti's 1969 Indy 500 fire suit. Heritage Auctions in Dallas has the suit, along with many other racing collectibles, up for bid as part of the Dr. Harlen Hunter Collection. It's complete with rips and stains from that day. Nothing wins a costume contest like aged Mario sweat and oil stains.

Without having Mario Andretti standing in your living room talking about his past races (yes, please), this is the biggest piece of history you can own from that day. The STP-sponsored Brawner Hawk car he drove to victory is sitting in the Smithsonian Museum. A replica of that car is in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.

If you were to bid the $4,400 – that's what your offer would have to be as of this writing – you wouldn't be wearing this out anywhere. It would likely sit in a nice case where you can show it off to your friends and family. And hopefully you'd teach the younger ones about Andretti's astounding career in motor sports.
