Rossi loses appeal, penalty stands
Valentino Rossi |
The Court of Arbitration for Sport has rejected Valentino Rossi's request for a stay of execution regarding the penalty he received in Malaysia, meaning he must start this weekend's Valencia finale from the back of the grid.
Rossi was handed three penalty points for colliding with Marc Marquez and allied to a point he received earlier in 2015 meant he would have to start the next round of the season from the back.
Representatives of Rossi and the FIM met at Lausanne to discuss the case on Wednesday, in the hope that a stay of execution would be granted, allowing the penalty to be potentially suspended until 2016.
However, the CAS rejected the request for a stay of execution.
"The CAS Arbitrator found that the conditions to grant the stay were not met, which means that the sanction imposed by FIM will have to be served at the next Grand Prix in Valencia."
The CAS also revealed that a written statement by counsel for Jorge Lorenzo was permitted.
However, the appeal process is still ongoing, with the statement confirming "the arbitration procedure is still in progress and a final decision on the merits will be rendered at a later stage."
As the final decision will not be made until after this weekend, Rossi must start at the back in Valencia.
Rossi currently leads Lorenzo in the championship by seven points.
