Red Bulls dominate at Phillip Island
Whincup takes Red Bull's second win of the day at Phillip Island |
Red Bull Racing Australia duo Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup have dominated the racing at the WD-40 Phillip Island SuperSprint today.
In addition to taking a race win, Championship challenger Lowndes has chopped the point's gap to leader Mark Winterbottom to 209 points, with 150 up for grabs tomorrow.
"We're just focusing on what we can do," said Lowndes of his dominant performance over Winterbottom today.
"If we can win races, and keep the pressure on, who knows what is going to happen.
"We've just got to do our thing and work pretty hard. The cars were fast today, there's no doubt about that."
Lowndes' teammate Whincup took the second win of the day, continuing his return to form following the ITM 500 Auckland two weeks' ago.
Whincup and Lowndes' efforts have seen Triple Eight slash the gap in the Team's Championship to 185 points from Prodrive Racing Australia.
"Absolutely, it was a good day for the team," Whincup said of their efforts. "We've put ourselves into contention today."
"(There's) a big 150-pointer coming up tomorrow. Really, tomorrow is probably the biggest day of the year, as far as the Championship goes.
"We're not going to lay down. We're going to do our thing."
Wilson Security GRM's Scott McLaughlin had a very solid day, taking pole and podiums in both of today's 60km races.
Despite the new found speed, he hasn't been able to convert it into a victory for around 12 months.
"It's Ok. It will come. It's just good to have some speed," McLaughlin said.
"To be giving these guys a run for their money, we've got genuine pace and we're pulling away from the other guys.
"But it would be nice to get my starts right, chucking it in reverse isn't the best thing. I suck at it!"
Earlier in the day, Prodrive's David Reynolds was left livid after being spun by kiwi flyer Shane van Gisbergen.
Reynolds finished last as a result, and it has virtually put him out of Championship contention after coming into the weekend in second place.
"He was drilling me a few corners before, drilled me at Siberia and must've got the tiniest little overlap – I don't know I was just turned around at high speed," Reynolds said on the telecast.
"I don't know – it's a really, really silly thing. Stupid, man, really stupid.
Asked if he expected an apology from van Gisbergen responded: "He's dead to me bro, dead to me."
Winterbottom now leads Lowndes by 209 points in the Championship, with 150 up for grabs tomorrow in the 200km race. His lead was 240 over Lowndes heading into the event.
The V8 Supercars hit the Phillip Island circuit at 11am tomorrow for a 15-minute practice session, before qualifying and 200km around the spectacular track.
