Penske targets 20 Indianapolis 500 wins
Roger Penske turned 79 yesterday |
Defending Indianapolis 500 champion team owner Roger Penske has revealed that his "outside goal" is to claim 20 victories at the prestigious event before retiring from the sport.
Penske's team has taken a record 16 wins at the Brickyard, the first earned by Mark Donohue in 1972 and the most recent achieved with Juan Pablo Montoya at last year's race.
In an interview with the official IndyCar website, during which he discussed his future in the series, Penske, who turned 79 on Wednesday, said: "I certainly don't have any plans to retire.
"As long as I have the funding and sponsorship, we're going to be running cars at the Indianapolis 500. My outside goal is 20 [Indy 500 wins]. I certainly wouldn't stop at 17."
Penske admits victory in 2016 would be particularly special, with Indianapolis preparing to stage the 100th running of the event, and Penske celebrating its 50th anniversary.
"When you put those two together, you'd have to say it's pretty special," he said.
"To stand at the driver's meeting this year, along with the winning driver, would be pretty special, because that's going to be an iconic photo that's going to last for the next 100 years."
Penske also has 13 IndyCar season championships to its name.
