Honda holds lead in IndyCar manufacturers’ championship

After one race in the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season, Honda holds an eight-point lead over Chevrolet in the manufacturers' championship, 93-85. Points are earned from the top three finishers for each manufacturer at each event, plus bonus points are given for winning the pole position (one point) and for the manufacturer leading the most race laps (two points).

Chevrolet earned 125 points March 13 at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, with its top three placers in first, second and fourth positions. Chevrolet also collected the bonus points for winning the pole position and leading the most laps. Chevrolet did incur a reduction of 40 manufacturer points following the Phoenix open test Feb. 26-27 for having engines on the Nos. 3 and 12 Team Penske entries changed before reaching their 2,500-mile life cycle, under Rule 10.6.5.3 of the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series rulebook.

Honda's 93 points were earned at St. Petersburg by its top three finishers placing third, fifth and sixth in the race.
