Andretti and Penske call for common IndyCar aero package

Mario Andretti’s suggestion for all cars to use the same aero bodywork for next month’s 100th Indianapolis 500, as reported Saturday in an exclusive azcentral sports interview, isn’t likely to happen even though Andretti believes it would make the race more entertaining.

Chevrolet and Honda have each developed their own aero kits at significant expense and Jay Frye, IndyCar’s competition president, said “to completely change, to go to one aero kit by (May) … I don’t see how that could be feasible … to completely discard everything we’ve done, I understand what Mario is saying, but I don’t see how it could be feasible."

Multi-car team owner Roger Penske said he supports eliminating the different aero kits as a cost-saving move and to create more of a level playing field. Chevrolet and Honda officials declined to comment.
