Magnussen penalized after Spanish GP
Kevin Magnussen |
Kevin Magnussen was handed a time penalty after the Spanish Grand Prix for colliding with Renault teammate Jolyon Palmer during the race, dropping him to 15th.
Magnussen was trying to pass Palmer for 13th when contact occurred on the final lap on what turned out to be a day of teammates coming to blows, with Mercedes crashing out of the race and feisty incidents between the Haas and Sauber drivers. The stewards penalized Magnussen for the incident as he was on newer tires.
The stewards' report said: "Car 20 [Magnussen] was on a new set of soft tires, and Car 30 [Palmer] was on an older set of hard tires leading the driver of Car 20 to have significantly better grip and speed. However, the Stewards determined that Car 20 could not have reasonably expected to make the corner of Turn 13 without colliding with Car 30, which was subsequently forced off the track.
"The Stewards imposed the penalty referred to, which was converted to a time penalty after the race as the cars were on the last lap."
Though he crossed in 14th, Magnussen's ten-second penalty means he finished 15th in the official classification, moving Sauber's Felipe Nasr up to 14th.
Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz was also handed a reprimand for leaving the pit lane one minute before it opened, which it does half an hour before lights out. It is the Spaniard's first reprimand of the season, though he gained two penalty points at the Russian Grand Prix for pushing Jolyon Palmer off the circuit.
