Massachusetts settles with INDYCAR, sues Boston Grand Prix

INDYCAR LLC has agreed to provide $925,000 in refunds for advance tickets purchased for the canceled Boston Grand Prix, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey has announced. Healey also noted she filed a lawsuit against Boston Grand Prix LLC (BGP) and CEO John Casey, seeking full refunds for all ticket purchasers.

Close to 4,000 consumers bought tickets for the planned Boston Grand Prix, which was supposed to take place Labor Day, for a total of $2,086,798.67. BGP initially refunded consumers $400,000 before stopping. INDYCAR agreed to pay $925,000 of the total.

"I appreciate INDYCAR’s willingness to step up for their fans and help resolve this problem," Healey said. "They've gone above and beyond to be a productive part of this solution, and their fans will reap the benefits."

Healey’s lawsuit against BGP, filed in Suffolk Superior Court, seeks full restitution for consumers who purchased tickets.

"Boston Grand Prix and its CEO knew full well when they marketed and sold this event that they didn’t have the resources or permits to make it happen," Healey said. "They failed to protect consumers, and we will do all we can to hold them accountable."
