Alonso faces 35-grid drop for new Power Unit

McLaren-Honda driver Fernando Alonso faces a grid drop worth 35 places at this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix, having taken on a brand new power unit after Friday's first practice session.

Alonso and team-mate Jenson Button moved on to their fifth new power units at Spa-Francorchamps, incorporating Honda's seven-token spend on ICE and Turbocharger updates.

Alonso, however, was restricted to just three out-in laps in FP1, due to a water leak from the ERS, and the team subsequently elected to fit another new power unit to his car for the remainder of the event.

Instead of reverting to an older-spec, Alonso will stick with the new-spec and take penalties.

Alonso is set to receive a 10-place penalty for using a sixth element for the first time, and additional five-place drops for swapping each of the remaining five elements, which adds up to 35 spots.

Lewis Hamilton and Marcus Ericsson are others taking engine-related grid drops; Hamilton's demotion currently stands at 15 places (MGU-H and Turbocharger), and Ericsson 10 (Turbocharger).
