Perez gets eight-place penalty

Sergio Perez has been handed a combined eight-place grid penalty for separate infractions during qualifying in Singapore.

Perez was investigated for allegedly failing to slow significantly for yellow flags when Haas' Romain Grosjean crashed at Turn 10 during the closing stages of Q2.

Further around the lap, more yellow flags were shown when Jenson Button stopped his McLaren in the run-off at Turn 16, having brushed the wall a few corners earlier.

Perez was deemed to have contravened regulations by passing Esteban Gutierrez while yellow flags were being displayed, before going on to complete his lap.

"[Perez] failed to reduce his speed significantly and be prepared to change direction or stop as required when double yellow flags were being waved at both Turns 9 and 10," confirmed the stewards.

"The stewards took into consideration the fact that the driver had two corners in which to slow down significantly and failed to do so and both of which were blind corners.

"[This] includes one [corner] where the accident had taken place and where the damaged car was still in the barriers.

"The driver would not have known if the track had a hazard wholly or partly blocking the track and/or marshals working on or beside the track."

For this indiscretion, Perez was handed a five-place grid drop, as well as having three penalty points added to his license, his first for the 12-month total.

For overtaking Gutierrez, Perez was slapped with a further three-place penalty, bringing his total to eight positions.

"I'm disappointed to receive the grid penalty because I did significantly lift off for the yellow flags during Q2," he said.

Perez, who went on to make it through to Q3, will now drop to 18th place on the grid.
