Sauber to build own engine?
(GMM) Peter Sauber has told customer engine supplier Ferrari that he's thinking about an alternate arrangement for 2006 and beyond, we can reveal. The current two-year contract, although the arrangement commenced almost a decade ago, will end in December next year. It was originally reported that Ferrari intended to conclude the deal so that it could work exclusively with new Russian-Canadian '06 entrant Midland F1. Sauber told us in an exclusive interview that the use of 'cheaper components' with the 2006 introduction of a 2.4 liter V8 formula may open 'different opportunities' for the Swiss-based team. Might that be a suggestion that Sauber, previously on a seemingly futile hunt for a carmaker partner, could build its own V8 engine? Sauber added: ''I will begin to evaluate all potential options, which naturally include Ferrari, at the beginning of the next season.''
