Fernandez might drive Busch car
UPDATE #2 This rumor is upgraded to 'fact' today. Adrian Fernandez will run for Hendrick Motorsports in the Busch Series race in Mexico City, and only for this race. His sponsors will be Lowe’s and Telmex. Jose Arrambide and Hector Serrano 01/28/05 Unwilling to have anything but an overwhelming success in its first south-of-the-border venture, NASCAR is believed to be working at securing Mexico’s biggest auto racing star, Adrian Fernandez, a one-off ride for the upcoming Busch Series race at Mexico City. Fernandez, who was shut out of an IndyCar ride this year due to lack of sponsorship dollars – he preferred to focus on his ownership role at Fernandez Racing, which will campaign cars for Scott Sharp and Kosuke Matsuura – could join his former Champ Car colleague Michel Jourdain Jr, so far event’s biggest fan-drawer. Jourdain has signed a deal with ppc Racing to contest the full 2005 Busch Series season. Mexican touring car standouts Carlos Contreras and Jorge Goeters have already been confirmed to race at the inaugural Telcel-Motorola 200 at the famed Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. SPEEDTV.com 01/23/05 In a Miami Herald article, Adrian Fernandez, who helped facilitate NASCAR's deal with his longtime sponsor, Telmex, to hold the Busch race in Mexico City in March, said he would consider racing a Busch car for that event. He has been approached by Busch teams, but only wants to do it if he's with a good team that has a shot to win.
