Hamilton tops opening practice for the Canadian GP

Will Hamilton's Canada domination continue or will Vettel defeat him on Sunday again?

Lewis Hamilton has dominated the Canadian GP in recent years and 2017 appears like that domination might continue. Hamilton topped opening practice on Friday morning with a time of 1m13.809, some 0.198 sec ahead of Championship leader Sebastian Vettel in the #5 Ferrari in a windy opening session on Montreal’s Ile Notre-Dame.

Following the two leaders was Valtteri Bottas in the 2nd Mercedes and Kimi Raikkonen in the 2nd Ferrari in third and fourth respectively.

Sergio Perez rounded out the top-5 for Force India.

McLaren Honda's woes continued as Fernando Alonso came to a grinding halt in Turn 10 complaining of gearbox and power steering issues.

Red Bull have yet to show their hand after running supersofts all through the session, while the others ran Ultrasofts for their best lap. Verstappen was seventh on 1m 14.861s before flat-spotting his right front with a wild moment going into the final corner, while Daniel Ricciardo spent the session beneath the radar on his way to ninth with 1m 15.441s, behind Massa’s Williams. Massa’s rookie team mate Lance Stroll was a second down on him in 13th on his home debut.
