Hamilton could face criminal charges

NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Bobby Hamilton Jr. could faces criminal charges in Tennessee after a wild melee at the Music City Motorplex in Nashville this past week. Hamilton was making a special guest appearance in the All-American Late Model Series Challenge.

Just 10 laps into the race, Hamilton and series veteran Mark Day got together on the track. The resulting crash sent Hamilton into the wall, ending his night. But as he was bringing his wrecked car down pit lane, he smashed into Day's car sending one of Day's crew members flying across the front of the car. Then crews from both teams starting throwing punches creating a situation that forced the track to red flag the race and call in local police to stop the fighting.

Hamilton told the Nashville Tennessean that the incident was a carryover from a highly publicized rift between Day and former Challenge Series driver Deborah Renshaw. Renshaw quit racing at the track because of the controversy and now drives in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series for Bobby Hamilton Sr. "Day ran off Deborah because he couldn't beat her," Hamilton said. "And now he pulls something like this."

One of Day's crew members, William Scogin, was slammed into the pit wall by Hamilton's car. Scogin, who met with Metro Nashville Police at the track, said that he was considering swearing out a warrant on Hamilton for vehicular assault. Toronto Sun
