BMW set to stick with Williams? Doubtful

UPDATE #2 We are downgrading this rumor to 'speculation' as it appears the Williams/BMW relationship is falling apart. “This is something I personally consider to be extremely unprofessional," Patrick Head told Italian magazine Sport Auto Moto when he heard that engine partner BMW said the partnership produced just 10 wins in 5 years.

"Unfortunately our partner chose to tell people they are perfect while accusing us. This is honestly something which shows very little character," he added.

"In my opinion, we should work like a united family, but instead this doesn't happen at all. In the last three years we've developed a starting system together – 50 percent ourselves and 50 percent them," Head revealed. "But when the car starts badly they are very ready to accuse; they never talk about 'our engine' or 'our clutch' or whatever." (Williams' cars have been among the slowest off the line at race starts this season). I think this is Mario Theissen's approach, and it's a dishonest approach. We must live with this way of behaving of theirs, but we can't act the same way."

06/06/05 Frank Williams admitted for the first time to German newspaper Bild that Williams F1 is considering alternative engines for ‘06. “We have a valid contract with BMW for next year, but I’m not worried anyway as there are several other engines available. BMW seems to be everywhere in Formula 1 these days, but we would gladly continue our partnership with BMW."

“Our former associations with Honda and Renault were substantially more cooperative and more successful," said Williams, letting BMW know he has options and they are not the best."

05/29/05 BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen has squashed rumors that they will drop the Williams team and buy Sauber. He told the media in Germany – "We are focusing on the co-operation with Williams," said Theissen. "We want to have a strong season together and I expect the relationship to continue beyond the end of the season. It certainly takes some time to adapt to a different package and I can tell you that we are very busy working on next year's package with the car and the engine.

"We really appreciate what we achieved as a team and it goes some way to what we expected," he said. "I certainly hope we can continue to get close to the frontrunners, to win races.

"We said at the beginning of this year that we are prepared to supply a second team from next year and soon after that we entered into discussions with Sauber," said Theissen. "Originally we were talking with Red Bull as well, but now it is only Sauber. We are discussing the situation and I would expect us to do that within June, probably to have a decision on what to do by the end of June.

"We will try to avoid two different engine design specs, but you might race more adventurous things not at the same time with all the cars you have on the grid," he said. "But that would always happen."
