Will F1 freeze engines?

Today, the FIA will meet in Paris to discuss a radical new rule for 2008. Max Mosley, the president of the governing body, the FIA, proposed a freeze on engine technology for 3 season to cut costs for the Formula One teams.

Mosley wants to cut costs in Formula One, to improve the safety standards. Mosley hopes to finalize the new regulations for 2008 for 30 June this year. McLaren, BMW, Toyota and Honda are no big fans of the new rule. Renault was the one to put the idea forward.

F1's appeal is in its high-technology – and the teams oppose Mosley's plans for restricting technical freedom in a number of ways. Renault came up with the idea of an engine freeze in F1, but of course they have one of the better engines right now.

"We're not keen on the idea of freezing the whole engine," Honda's F1 boss Nick Fry told Autosport.com. "It makes it very impractical for all the engine manufacturers."

Toyota F1 boss John Howett added: "Three years out is quite a long way to freeze an engine after a very limited period of running with it."
