Hendrick Motorsports has hired veteran engineer Alba Colon to oversee its competition systems group.

Colon, who for years has successfully helped advance Chevrolet’s NASCAR program, takes over the position at Hendrick Motorsports from Darian Grubb, who will be William Byron’s crew chief in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series this year.

Colon is expected to help to improve the team’s simulation programs, at-track research and development and much more. She’ll officially join Hendrick Motorsports later this month.

The Spanish native who grew up in Puerto Rico graduated from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez with an engineering degree. She joined Chevrolet in 1994 as engineer on its NASCAR program. She worked her way through the ranks and in 2001 began overseeing Chevrolet’s NASCAR Cup Series program.

GM, Chevrolet’s parent company, release a statement regarding Colon’s departure: “Alba Colon was a key contributor to Chevrolet’s racing success for over two decades, including 14 NASCAR Cup manufacturers’ championships as our program manager in the series. We thank Alba for all of her contributions to Chevrolet Motorsports."
