Paffett or Monteiro at Spyker
After earlier speculation that had linked him with the 2007 seat next to Fernando Alonso waned, it is understood that the McLaren test driver's management – led by former racer Martin Brundle – earned Ron Dennis' support in seeking a drive elsewhere.
It was also rumored in recent days that newly crowned GP2 champion Lewis Hamilton had been mentioned for the Spyker seat, but the McLaren protégé now appears more likely to make his debut for the Mercedes-powered squad in 2007.
The stumbling block for 25-year-old Paffett, however, could be Spyker's preference for a paying driver. It is not thought likely that either McLaren or Mercedes would fund the Briton's grand prix debut. He is also not significantly funded by sponsors.
Should he not appear on next year's grid, Paffett is understood to be assured of a continued test role at McLaren.
We hear that Tiago Monteiro is more likely to retain his seat in the team having raised the necessary financial backing.
