Tracy to help NASCAR succeed in Montreal

UPDATE Paul Tracy says he likely won't be at this summer's Busch Grand National race in Montreal. The former Champ Car champion tells the Speed TV program "WindTunnel" that plans for him to drive the No. 77 car for Kevin Harvick Inc. simply fell through due to sponsorship conflicts.

Tracy says he was contacted about a month ago by Kevin Harvick who offered him a competitive ride in his Busch Series car alongside fellow Canadian Ron Fellows. Tracy says both sides could not find a suitable compromise between one of his primary sponsors (Monster Energy Drinks) and Harvick's sponsor, so the deal fell apart.

05/29/07 The biggest star in the Champ Car World Series — Paul Tracy — was nowhere near the Indianapolis 500 on the weekend, but he still managed to grab a lot of attention when he revealed that he is just days away from signing a deal to run with a top NASCAR Busch team in time for the series' Canadian debut in Montreal on Aug. 4.

Tracy was testing his No. 3 Forsythe Championship Racing Panoz at Mt. Tremblant, Que., when he let it slip that he had changed his mind about not giving NASCAR another shot.

He had been adamant at the start of the 2007 Champ Car season that he wanted to concentrate on winning a second championship, but that dream ended when he crashed into a concrete barrier at Long Beach, crushing a vertebrae in his lower back and forcing him to miss the race in Houston.

Sources have told Sun Media that Tracy was contacted by his old buddy Richard Childress about the possibility of driving one of his Richard Childress Racing Chevrolets at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

"There was some pressure put on NASCAR by Montreal race promoter Normand Legault to get Tracy a good ride and that's how RCR got involved," the source said.

Most likely it will be the No. 21 Chevrolet — the 2006 NBS championship team — that already has been to victory lane this season with defending champion Kevin Harvick behind the wheel. Toronto Sun
