NASCAR to suspend Busch

UPDATE Look for Kurt Busch to be suspended for one race by NASCAR after he almost killed one of Tony Stewart's crew members in an after-race altercation on pit road at Dover Monday. His COT was also found to be illegal after the Dover race so look for some stiff penalties in that regard as well.

06/06/07 So, NASCAR, is safety a priority? If so, Kurt Busch should be suspended for a minimum of two races. His pit-road hissy fit must be dealt with swiftly and leave no room for misinterpretation.

And a six-digit fine, the loss of owner and driver points and being placed on super-secret double probation citing Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing) of the series rule book ain't gonna to cut it.

These aren't the days of frontier justice; Nextel Cup is the pinnacle of stock-car racing. The days of Cale vs. Bobby are long gone, though I readily support the side that says drivers' passion cannot be neutered. It's a fine line — and one that Busch obviously cannot walk.

Drivers shouldn't let their emotions put others in harm's way. To be blunt, Busch was borderline negligent: Failure to exercise the degree of care considered reasonable under the circumstances, resulting in an unintended injury to another party.

Busch and Tony Stewart have a history of denting each other's sheet metal, but ramming the other's car on pit road — with crew members over the wall, no less — is inexcusable. Drivers who retaliated on the track have been parked for potentially far less dangerous situations. NASCAR.com
