NASCAR has postponed Sunday's Cup series race at Martinsville Speedway to Monday because of snow.

Snow began falling Saturday afternoon, stopping the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race after 23 laps. That race will resume at 11 a.m. ET Monday, with the NASCAR Cup series STP 500 to follow at approximately 2 p.m. ET. Both races will air on FS1 as previously scheduled.

NASCAR made the decision to postpone the race as enough snow had fallen in the area of the Virginia racetrack overnight. Nearby areas in the mountains received several inches of snow, and getting fans — at least some who would have had to navigate dangerous conditions — into the snow-covered facility, which has mostly grass parking lots, could have been difficult.

NASCAR executive vice president Steve O'Donnell tweeted that the decision was made for safety reasons.

The last time snow postponed a NASCAR Cup race came in 1993 at Atlanta.

Cup series drivers did get 100 minutes of practice Saturday and will line up in order of team owner points.

Martin Truex Jr. is on the pole, with Kyle Busch joining him on the front row. AccuWeather forecasts a high of 49 degrees with a 2 percent chance of rain Monday.
