Bernie could be knighted – report

(GMM) Bernie Ecclestone could be the next British motor racing stalwart to be knighted by the Queen.

The F1 chief executive, who is 77, would follow in the footsteps of Sir Frank Williams, Sir Jack Brabham, Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jackie Stewart, if the prediction of the Swiss newspaper Blick is correct.

Following the recent New Year's Honors list, the next British honors will be unveiled to coincide with the Queen's birthday in June.

Ecclestone, however, said in an interview recently that he would not automatically accept such an honor.

Indeed, in 1996, it is understood that Ecclestone declined an invitation to become a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for "services to motor racing".

"I'd have to give it some serious thought if it was offered," he said.
