BMW could return to ALMS

BMW might return to the American Le Mans Series in 2009 with a V8-powered M3. BMW North America withdrew from the series at the end of 2006.

BMW Motorsport in Germany is working on a race version-almost certainly a GT2-class car-of the new M3, but it is unknown if company management has signed off on the project. BMW Motorsport boss Mario Theissen has said repeatedly that a GT program is one of the company's long-term goals.

Meanwhile, BMW North America motorsport manager Martin Birkmann denied the project's existence. "There is nothing concrete we can shout about right now, but we are keen to go racing again," he said.

Series gossip suggests that Rahal Letterman Racing is the favorite to run the BMWs should the program go ahead. AutoWeek
