Giedo may join Hamad for GP2 Series
According to a source close to the Bahraini motor racing star, Van der Garde, from the Netherlands, is iSport's leading choice to take the team's vacant race seat for the continental championship.
"Van der Garde is iSport's number one choice," the source told the Gulf Daily News. "Hopefully he signs with the team. He is a great racer, and he is very much respected by Hamad."
Should the 23-year-old Dutchman confirm a deal, he and Hamad will both be making their debut campaigns in GP2, which is Formula One's 'feeder sport'. Hamad is set to become the first-ever Arab driver to reach the GP2 level.
Meanwhile, motorsport website autosport.com reported that several others will be tested by iSport for a chance to win the GP2 race seat.
Those shortlisted include British Formula Three International Championship leader Briton Oliver Turvey, fellow British F3 racer Swede Marcus Ericsson, veteran GP2 competitor Brazilian Diego Nunes, and Frenchman Nelson Philippe, who drove in the Champ Car World Series, which is another single-seater racing series that went belly up.
According to a team spokeswoman contacted by the GDN yesterday, iSport is expected to make a decision regarding Hamad's teammate "in the near future."
