Hulkenberg eyes Williams seat

Nico Hulkenberg

Williams test driver Nico Hülkenberg is hoping that a solid debut season in GP2 this year will help him be promoted to a race seat at the team in 2010. The German is a regular fixture on the test circuits around Europe, and has already attracted much attention in the GP2 Asia series, after putting himself into championship contention after just two events. However, Nico will have to wait until the main GP2 series starts in May to get his next fix of racing, with him due to hand his car back to Pastor Maldonado for the final rounds of the Asian tour.

Speaking to British website Crash.net, Hülkenberg was focused on performing well in GP2 this year. “I'm just trying to have a good GP2 season. In motorsport you always need to be successful to move on and make yourself interesting to other people," he said.

However, he is hoping that a solid GP2 season will help him graduate to a race seat at Williams in 2010, and having dominated the Formula Three Euroseries in 2008, few are betting against that happening. “When I started motor racing it was clear for me that I wanted to go up to Formula 1 one day," continued Nico, “so maybe if I have a good season there will be an opportunity next year to race with Williams."

Williams will race with Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima in 2009, but with both drivers' contracts due to expire at the end of the season, 21-year-old Hülkenberg may find an opening.
