Ganassi to be first to switch to VW engines?
Chip Ganassi was quick to switch to Honda power in CART/Champ Car early, which combined with his jump to Firestone tires, led to many victories in the Alex Zanardi and Jimmy Vasser era. Then he ditched Honda and switched to Toyota power and enjoyed many wins with Juan Montoya.
Ganassi was also the first CART team to break rank and run the Indy 500 in 2000 with Juan Montoya – a race they dominated if you recall.
Now rumors are swirling in the IndyCar paddock that Ganassi may be the first big team that jumps to VW power in 2012 if VW enters IndyCar racing as rumored. VW will probably want to snatch at least one additional big team and Team Penske could be that other big team as Roger Penske as both VW and Audi dealerships. Penske and Ganassi are joined at the hip when it comes to racing, where one goes the other usually follows.
