Abu Dhabi GP to be seen in HD?

UPDATE Note: the IndyCar Series has had HD on-board cameras that pan 360 degrees since the start of the 2008 season.

10/09/09 The season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix could be the first ever to be broadcast in High Definition, F1 Racing magazine reports. The ultra-high quality television pictures have long since been proposed by Formula One commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone and could now be a reality full-time in 2010.With Formula One's world feed having been broadcast in 16:9 widescreen format since 2007, Formula One Management (FOM) is now set to go one step further by introducing HD for the dust-night race in Abu Dhabi as a trial ahead of next season, when the format could be a permanent fixture.

"We are getting close because I have asked all of our broadcasters and about 50 percent of them have said yes," Ecclestone told the magazine, with the United Kingdom's BBC being one of the broadcasters in favor of HD transmission.

It has also been reported that HD can now be integrated into the miniscule on-board car cameras, an issue which FOM has been attempting to solve.
