D’Ambrosio tipped for 2010 Renault seat

UPDATE #2 (GMM) Jerome d'Ambrosio has played down intensifying speculation that he is close to being named as Robert Kubica's teammate at Renault for 2010.

The 24-year-old is part of the Gravity Sport management stable, which until now has been run by the newly Genii Capital-controlled team's new boss Eric Boullier.

Belgian d'Ambrosio drove in GP2 last year for DAMS, a French team formerly headed by Boullier.

D'Ambrosio also has historical ties to Renault, including as a prominent member of the French marque's driver development program, and stints in Formula Renault and the Renault World Series.

But he told the Belgian sports newspaper La Derniere Heure: "F1 is not on the agenda.

"Everything that has been happening in recent weeks has been positive for me, but it is no guarantee of anything.

"My hope is to race in grands prix one day. But before that, I have to focus on my job in GP2, which is to win races."

D'Ambrosio added that he hopes to have moved closer to the F1 grid by the end of 2010.

"If at the end of the year I have not had the opportunity to sit in an F1 car, it becomes difficult. But my goal is no longer a dream, even if I am not getting myself distracted," he said.

01/07/10 (GMM) Robert Kubica's teammate at Renault in 2010 is not likely to be a Frenchman, Eric Boullier has admitted.

The Enstone based team, recently taken over by Luxembourg based investment company Genii Capital, has installed the 36-year-old Frenchman as its new permanent boss.

But Boullier told French radio RMC that none of his countrymen are high on the list of potential teammates for the 25-year-old Pole Kubica.

Boullier's comments are a blow to Romain Grosjean, the Swiss born Frenchman who completed the 2009 season for Renault and had hoped to retain the seat this season.

He said the shortlist for the second cockpit has been recently reduced from ten to just five drivers.

"There are several possible scenarios, one of them French," said Boullier. "But, today, that is the scenario with perhaps the least chance of success."

He said earlier this week that Kubica's teammate could be "a Gravity driver", or one of those from within the stable of the Genii-linked driver management outfit Gravity Sport, such as Ho-Pin Tung or Jerome d'Ambrosio.

Boullier told RMC: "We have made progress but are still far from being able to disclose the (driver's) name."

12/28/09 (GMM) Jerome d'Ambrosio has emerged as a possible candidate to be Robert Kubica's teammate at Renault in 2010.

The 24-year-old Belgian has been a GP2 driver in the last two years, and in the wake of the Genii buyout, he is being linked with the Enstone based team by sections of the French press.

Like the Dutch-born Chinese Ho-Pin Tung, who earlier this month tested the R29, d'Ambrosio is managed by the Gravity Sport management company, which has links to Genii's Gerard Lopez.

Gravity Sport CEO Eric Boullier is the new boss of the newly Lopez-controlled Renault team. He is also the former boss of the DAMS GP2 team, for whom d'Ambrosio raced in 2009.

D'Ambrosio also has historical ties to Renault, including as a prominent member of the French marque's driver development program, and stints in Formula Renault and the Renault World Series.
