IRL to be terminated

Today IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard will unveil plans Friday to ditch the Indy Racing League moniker, which has been used since the series' 1996 inception and carries connotations of a bitter split from the defunct Champ Car/CART.

"What better place to explain the transition than in Milwaukee," Bernard said Thursday. "There's so much history and tradition, and we're discontinuing IRL in favor of IndyCar, a [dirty] word that's been known around the world for a long time."
