Alonso “50/50” on LMP1 Return With Toyota

Fernando Alonso says there’s a “50/50" chance he’ll continue with Toyota Gazoo Racing for a second consecutive season in the FIA World Endurance Championship, admitting that a number of elements still remain at play for his post-Le Mans schedule.

The two-time Formula 1 world champion, who makes his second start in the Rolex 24 at Daytona this weekend, has so far only confirmed his participation in the Indianapolis 500 with McLaren, as well as completing the 2018-19 WEC season, which concludes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.

Alonso and co-drivers Kazuki Nakajima and Sebastien Buemi currently lead the drivers’ championship by five points over their Toyota teammates, which claimed wins in the last two races at Fuji and Shanghai.

When asked by Sportscar365 on how likely he’ll remain in the WEC with Toyota for the 2019-20 season, Alonso said the chances are currently “50/50."

“Obviously I want to finish this Super Season in the best way possible," he said.

“We’re leading the world championship now. Le Mans will be the final race. It would be nice to have another opportunity to win it.

“Then the following [season], until June I’m very, very busy.

“After June, it depends how it goes in the WEC championship, the Indy 500 in May.

“Maybe there are other challenges that may appear in the future [where] the WEC may be a priority or not. That will be the final decision."
