Rolex Hour 22: Alonso leads under red flag

The No. 10 Cadillac leads the Rolex 24 under red

Rain, rain and more rain with 22 hours complete in the 2019 Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Two-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso has the No. 10 Cadillac out in front with the race currently under caution. Much of the last 5-6 hours have been run under the caution as rain has been hammering Daytona International Speedway.

The No. 31 Cadillac piloted by Felipe Nasr runs second. Nasr was in the lead before running wide entering the first turn. He gave way to Alonso who has been outstanding in the wet.

The Cadillacs have clearly had the better of the third place No. 7 Acura Team Penske entry in the wet, and it looks as though the battle for the overall win will be between the No. 10 and No. 31.

And just now, the race has gone red with 1 hour 56 minutes remaining. Just before the red flag, longtime IndyCar driver Sebastian Saavedra put the No. 18 LMP2 into the tire barrier. Saavedra had a 4-lap lead in class at the time, and thus remains in the league under the red flag. That will be an interesting story to follow if/when the race goes back to green.

It means the 50th edition of the Rolex 24 is the first to have been neutralized twice by the red flags.
