Interlagos set for changes?

The Brazilian motor racing federation has asked the FIA for safety advice after a stock car driver died at the Interlagos on Sunday.

Gustavo Sondermann was killed when he crashed into the barriers at turn 14 of Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace and bounced back into oncoming traffic.

In 2007, Rafael Sperafico, Sondermann's team-mate at the time, died in an almost identical collision. Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso both suffered serious crashes in a similar area in 2003.

'Softwall' barriers have been used in place of tires since Sperafico's accident, but Sondermann's death has renewed calls for the 'Subida dos Boxes' section of the track to be rebuilt, a possibility that the Confederacao Brasileira de Automobilismo (CBA) may be open to.

"I have asked the FIA ​​to send an inspector to the race track," and CBA president Clayton Pinteiro.

"We have not found a solution to improve safety and races will now start with a yellow flag in that stretch."

Pinteiro admitted that the new barriers had not worked.

"I think there is no other option but to expand the run-off area for this corner," he added.

This would, however, be no straightforward task though as the area beyond the corner does not form part of the circuit.

The Brazilian Grand Prix is scheduled to take place at Interlagos on 27th November.
