Salary reveals Ricciardo went to Renault for big money
When in doubt, follow the money |
Australian F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo has every reason to keep smiling after his massive pay packet for Renault was recently revealed.
Ricciardo, 29, shifted from Red Bull Racing in the off-season, feeling it was the opportune time to lead a team on the rise, but AR1.com always said it was to make a lot of money for his retirement.
Well maybe both are true.
His new reported salary was definitely a significant factor – Ricciardo is now earning a staggering $49millon (AUS) a season after penning a two-year deal with Renault.
People know a little of what I'm like, but they don't really know me,' he recently told Fairfax Media.
'To think I've got the chance to lead a team of, say, 1000 people, it's intimidating and exhilarating at the same time.
'I have the opportunity here (Renault) to create something.'
Ricciardo is adamant Renault can be competitive on the grid, with the aim to keep the 'big three' – Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull – honest.
The challenge begins this weekend in Melbourne, when Albert Park hosts the annual Australian Grand Prix.
'I think the philosophy (at Renault) this year will be quite different as far as the upgrades we now have,' Ricciardo said.
'I think the plan and the structuring is going to change, and their philosophy on what to bring and when to bring it. I believe that is going to change.
'I will be part of that and trust that process, and hope we are staying ahead of the curve.'
Ricciardo will look to improve on his best finish at Melbourne — fourth place, which he has achieved twice.
No Australian has graced the Albert Park podium since it became a world championship round back in 1985.
