SMI to build American copy of Nurburgring?

Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Chairman O. Bruton Smith may be getting into the road racing business. Smith recently told Sirius XM Sports that he has been contacted by “some Germans" who would like to build a copy of the famed Nurburgring circuit on a parcel of land near Las Vegas.

Smith said the reasoning behind the project is that manufacturers want to test vehicles throughout the year and Nurburgring has a lot of unfit weather.

Smith told Sirius he had been in contact with the Governor of Nevada and the Nevada Bureau of Land Management regarding an 8,000-acre plot of land.

“If the state of Nevada…really wants it, then we’re going to go out there and we’re going to build a copy of the Nürburgring," Smith told Sirius XM Sports.

SMI has built oval tracks and drag straps, but has yet to built a purpose-built road course. However, the drag strip at Infineon Raceway incorporates a traditional road course and several of the superspeedways include infield road courses. NSSN
