Baku GP: Leclerc & Vettel bury everyone in final practice
Charles Leclerc is proving to be the faster of the two Ferrari drivers |
Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel again ran 1-2 in the third and final practice for the Baku GP Saturday morning.
Leclerc's time of 1m41.604s was 0.198s up on his German teammate Vettel but a whopping 1.248s up on third quick Max Verstappen. The German was on pole at this circuit last year, but seems to have some serious competition in the form of his team mate here today.
However, sandbagging Mercedes have yet to show their hand with Bottas 1.46s back and Hamilton 1.57s back.
Hot on the heels of the silver cars came a very close midfield pack, headed by Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat and rookie team mate Alex Albon, split by the Haas of Kevin Magnussen.
Sergio Perez gave Racing Point a top-ten placing in ninth, while Kimi Raikkonen completed the top ten for Alfa Romeo.
Pierre Gasly – who knows he will start Sunday’s race from the pit lane thanks to a weighbridge infringement in FP2, finished last behind the two Williams, obviously focusing on race preparation work.
The bigger question now is can anyone prevent a Ferrari front-row lockout? We'll know in a little under three hours.
Pole time last year by Vettel was 1m41.498s, 1.5 seconds faster than what he managed in P3 last year. If history repeats itself, we could see a pole time today around 1m40s flat
