Stewart holds off Johnson in Las Vegas

Tony Stewart holds off Jimmy Johnson late

Tony Stewart held off a charging Jimmie Johnson in a five-lap shootout to win his first Cup race at Las Vegas. The victory gives Stewart 14 wins in Sprint Cup.

Stewart survived four late restarts to win the Kobalt Tools 400 Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Stewart, the defending Sprint Cup champion, dominated this race last year, leading 163 laps, but fell behind due to a mistake on pit road and wound up a disappointing second. The win was his first at Las Vegas and first with new crew chief Steve Addington, who replaced championship crew chief Darian Grubb after last season.

Stewart held the lead on a restart with four laps to go while Matt Kenseth, who was running fourth, hit the wall. Johnson, meanwhile, challenged Stewart for the lead, trying him high and low, but Stewart held him off.

Johnson, who started at the rear of the field after wrecking in practice, finished second followed by Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards and Clint Bowyer.

Kenseth, who ran up front all day, wound up 22nd.
