British Grand Prix to be week later next year

Formula One have agreed to move next year's British Grand Prix back a week — to July 19 — to avoid another needless clash with rival events.

Silverstone revealed the date on Thursday in an email to fans. It means the race will sidestep the finals of Euro 2020 at Wembley and the Wimbledon men's singles final.

It will, however, go up against the final round of the Open golf at Royal St George's.

Silverstone wanted to move away from their previous slot, having lost exposure to England's Cricket World Cup heroics and the Wimbledon drama between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer last month.

Although the Grand Prix was the best attended of those events, it attracted a smaller share of TV viewers.

June 28 was a strong possibility for the 2020 race, but that date proved impossible to accommodate, given the other moving pieces on the F1 calendar.
