Darlington Raceway is trending toward a sellout of its 47,000-seat grandstand for Sunday’s Bojangles’ Southern 500, which would be the first at the venue since the NASCAR Throwback event began in ’15.

Track President Kerry Tharp wrote in a text message that the track is “anticipating a strong crowd on Saturday (for the NASCAR Xfinity Series race) and working toward having a capacity crowd Sunday (for the Southern 500)."

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is expected to make his one and only appearance in the Xfinity Series this weekend, driving for JR Motorsports. ISC tracks can announce sellouts as long as they are within 1.5% of reaching zero tickets left, and a source said the track is in that range. The sellout would be the third of the season after the Daytona 500 and the sole annual Cup race at Watkins Glen Int'l. Adam Stern/SBD
