IndyCars to get much needed canopies

How many more open wheel drivers are we going to be killed or seriously injured due to head trauma before canopies are put on the cars as pushed for by AR1.com for five years? Charlie Kimball was lucky in qualifying at Pocono. He got up into the fence and luckily the bottom of his car impacted the fence, but it could have been his head and he could be in the hospital alongside Justin Wilson right now.

The group who plans to make a major play for IndyCar plans to have all new cars and they will have canopies because the sport cannot keep killing off the stars. While they initially planned to make an offer to buy the IndyCar series, we now hear their proposal will be to partner with the Hulman-George family.

Below are images that show conceptually how the canopies will work, and they are based on Adrian Newey's X1 car design. Notice how the hinges can work.

A fire suppression system will be included and the canopy can easily be pried off with a crowbar if the canopy won't open after an accident
The cars of course will not have headlights and fenders. They will remain open wheel cars, just not open cockpit cars. However, given the current bodykits on IndyCars, one has to question whether they are really still open wheel cars.
