Castroneves leads Chevy qualifying sweep in Iowa
Helio Castroneves |
Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan will start from the front row in the Iowa Corn 300 tonight leading a Chevy sweep of the top-7 positions.
When Castroneves first broke onto the IndyCar scene during the CART days, he was immediately fast on the short ovals, and he remains so today. We remember his performance at the Chicago Motor Speedway at Sportsman's Park located in Cicero, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, which was built in 1999 by Chip Ganassi. He took a mediocre car to 5th place that day.
Castroneves posted a two-lap average speed of 183.480 mph (35.0817 seconds) on the 0.894-mile oval to earn his third Verizon P1 Award of the season and 44th of his Indy car career.
Last weekend at The Milwaukee Mile, Castroneves started from the rear of the 24-car grid and charged through the field over the 250 laps to finish second.
[adinserter name="GOOGLE AD"]"Every time you start in the back it’s a tough one, so this is much better," said Castroneves, who is driving the No. 3 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet. "Last week we showed with a good car we can go through the field."
Kanaan posted a two-lap average of 183.125 mph (35.1497 seconds) for his first front-row start of the season. Kanaan, driving the No. 10 Fusion Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, has finished second in two of the past four races and has placed on the podium at Iowa Speedway the previous five races.
"It was a very tough two laps, and thank goodness it is a short track because the car was on edge," said Kanaan, who will make his 246th consecutive start.
Verizon IndyCar Series championship points leader Juan Pablo Montoya (182.707 mph) in the No. 2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet will share Row 2 with Scott Dixon (182.357) in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet.
With this pole Castroneves remains fourth on the all-time list of pole winners – Note: See rundown of all-time winners thru 2014 below qualifying results.
NBCSN’s telecast of the 300-lap race starts at 8 p.m. ET.
