Leaked Documents Say the Corvette Gets a DOHC V8 in 2018

Corvette DOHC engine for 2018?
Corvette DOHC engine for 2018?

Today's Corvette is the modern-day champion of the pushrod engine, its 6.2-liter V8 eschewing multi-cam nonsense for one bump-stick living deep inside the vee of the cylinders. Well, that could all change very soon, with a dual-overhead-cam engine potentially slated for the Corvette as early as 2018.

GM Authority reveals that internal GM documents indicate a dual-overhead-cam engine is headed to the Corvette in 2018. The documents, which have since been removed from the internet, point to a 6.2-liter aluminum-block DOHC engine with GM book code "Y"–marking the motor as a Corvette exclusive. According to the GM documents, the current 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated LT1 and 6.2-liter supercharged LT4 would remain available in 2018, marking the DOHC engine as potentially a limited-production high-performance option.

The only other time a DOHC engine has been featured in a Corvette was the Lotus-designed LT5 that powered the Corvette ZR-1 from 1990 to 1995. GM Authority speculates that Chevrolet could bring back the LT5 engine designation for this rumored 2018 motor.

All this evidence points to the DOHC engine as a hallmark feature of some as-yet-unspecified top-of-the-line Corvette for 2018. Will the new motor feature in the return of the Corvette ZR1, which made 650 horses on its last appearance? Or could it be slated for the oft-rumored mid-engine Corvette? We'll know for certain when 2018 rolls around.
