UPDATE It happened again.

2017: The Chevys were nowhere in practice and the Clash. All of a sudden they occupy the front row. NAPA is in a battle with IndyCar to keep the NAPA sponsorship on Elliott's car. Dale Jr. is back from a concussion and both he and Chase Elliott are the two most fan-popular drivers in NASCAR – this helps to sell tickets.

Who will it be in 2018?

02/19/17 The race is not a sellout again. Something must be done to fill the grandstands. Who will the timing and scoring computers put on the pole for the Daytona 500 to help sell more race tickets? In recent years it was:

2013: Danica Patrick becomes 1st woman to win NASCAR Cup Series pole
2014: Austin Dillon wins pole in 1st race by driver in #3 since Dale Earnhardt's death
2015: Jeff Gordon wins pole for his final Daytona 500; fastest pole speed since 1987 (201.293 MPH)
2016: Chase Elliott, son of Bill, wins the pole in the #24's first race since Jeff Gordon's retirement; youngest pole winner in Daytona 500 history
