Supercars News: Cam Waters conquers rough battle in Tasmania

Monster Energy Ford Mustang driver Cam Waters has won an argy bargy race that closes out the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint, and sets up a grandstand run to the finish of the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship.

Waters third victory of 2024, and first since Townsville in July was his first ever at Symmons Plains, and 14th of his career.

Behind Waters was Championship leader Willl Brown, who finished second in his #87 Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaro, third was Middy’s Racing’s Darwin product Bryce Fullwood, his second career podium, and best result since 2020.

Brown’s second placing coupled with Chaz Mostert finishing in fourth place, means the Championship lead at the top is back out to 81 points, with Brown holding the advantage heading into next month’s opening endurance event of the year, the Penrite Oil Sandown 500.

It was heartbreak for his Waters’ Tickford teammate Thomas Randle who gifted Waters the race lead on the opening lap, and then ran into trouble and penalties after run-ins with both Red Bull drivers.

“I’m so happy to get the win,” said Waters.

“I got a good start and so did Tommy, and he fought hard for Turn 1 which was fine.

“He just made a little mistake at Turn 4 and ran wide, but I’m gutted for him, he probably should be up here on the podium with me.

“I was just trying to keep a small gap to Will and trying to let him cook his tyres, and I knew Tommy was in there, and with 20 to go I started to push on.

“I tried to break the tow for Will and make it easier for Tom, I’m not really sure what happened to him.”

After a door-to-door clash with Will Brown that saw Randle go off into the grass and concede second place, the Castrol Mustang driver made a mistake at the hairpin and collided with Broc Feeney while fighting for third place. He was awarded a 15 second penalty and finished the race in 18th position.

There were numerous clashes between drivers on track, none bigger than rookies Aaron Love and Jaxon Evans, who came together at high speed on the front straight. Love bumped Evans who went off track and into a concrete wall at high speed, destroying the rear wheel of the SCT Camaro.

Defending Supercars Champion Brodie Kostecki finished 23rd, after receiving three consecutive penalties for an incident in pit lane where he collided with Mark Winterbottom.

With sprint events out of the way, all attention now turns to the Sandown 500 which runs 13-15 September at the famous Melbourne circuit.

For the first time in 2024, the racing will include co-drivers such as Bathurst winners Jamie Whincup, Garth Tander, Craig Lowndes and Lee Holdsworth among the field.

With 300 points on offer to the winners of both Sandown and October’s Repco Bathurst 1000, the results of the next two rounds will be pivotal in deciding this year’s Supercars Champion.
